no other antivirus whatsoever I cannot do this successfully. It's a fantastic piece of kit and we'd love to have it picked up by our Labtech setup as we're currently rolling Webroot out throughout our client base.The issues we currently face are:
1. Labtech looks for a definition file, which I'm fairly sure Webroot does not store locally, so we cannot supply one.
2. Labtech looks for a command line scan function, which we cannot locate.

LabTech's Global Client Management Platform (pricing available only from LabTech) is primarily designed to monitor and manage laptops, workstations, servers, network devices, and mobile devices; however the company also includes powerful automation capability that lets IT admins turn rote tasks into server-executed tasks. This can be a boon in large organizations where operations can span hundreds or even thousands of devices. The software can also be purchased as a platform on which managed service providers (MSPs) can build a cloud-operated IT management service or as an internal package for a corporate IT department. While the software has many innovative features, the platform is relatively new and this immaturity translated into difficulties with operations like patching, depth of information from different platforms, and a reported slowness in update availability. It's also a very large and expansive platform built in a modular fashion, which means that many features, like remote desktop control for instance, are actually available only as add-on modules or through third-parties. A more complete base package and one that is more suited to small and medium businesses (SMBs) is our Editors' Choice winner Desktop Central.
LabTech has a straightforward architecture: A client agent tracks and reports on hardware and software inventories, manages software and patch distribution, and monitors device availability. It also has some innovative features like process and services monitoring and management, integrated help desk ticketing, and remote control. LabTech is highly flexible, with native automation features as well as support for PowerShell scripts, though this will necessarily tie users to the Windows and Windows Server platforms. There are agents available for Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android. Some users have complained that the depth of information varies too greatly between different operating systems, providing great information for Windows devices but only the most rudimentory data on Linux and Mac clients.
The platform's core is its server, which can be configured on-premises or in the cloud. The Control Center software manages the server. Agents are deployed from the server to the machines (workstations, servers, mobile devices) to be managed. The overall installation process is straightforward: Install the software, configure policy, map users onto machine names and configure groups/locations, set policy for patching and scanning schedules, build the agent, and push it to network clients. A time-saving feature is that the first agent can be configured as a network probe agent that scans for all of the Windows machines on your network and then automatically pushes the agent to each discovered client machine.
Installation
Downloading and installing the control center was effortless, although it is worth mentioning that this is not a lightweight client since it is written in .Net and occupies 105MB on disk. Most IT management software is browser-based these days. Running the control center is very slow; this might be due to my trial version being hosted in LabTech's cloud and not running on an on-premises server. Whatever the reason for poor performance, simply logging in and launching the control center took upwards of 2 minutes during my testing, while the software itself is very slow, taking 5-plus seconds to update reports and fill in forms.
Plenty of help resources are available. There is a very good getting started wizard and tours and demo videos are on the website, accessible directly from the control center software under the menu item LabTech Online. A software-usage tips window appeared when I launched the program and the dashboard contained a link to a Getting Started video. Under Favorites on the lower left hand side of the screen, there are videos outlining tasks such as deploying agents and client management.

Working with LabTech
The GUI itself is a low-frills affair made up of tables and forms. Clicking or double-clicking items brings up more information, usually in a new window that pops up over the control center. However, these windows often covered up other menu items which made navigating through various windows quite cumbersome. There are additional areas of the GUI that exhibit a similar lack of polish.
On the left side of the screen, there is a navigation tree that includes all of the major areas of functionality such as agent deployment, client management, ticketing and timekeeping, agent monitoring, status overview, patch management, and system configuration. Running across the top of the control center screen is a series of menus that include main (select the module in which to work), view, heads-up display (for viewing alerts and monitors), Tools (reporting and configuration), and Help. Under that is a row of buttons for viewing the commonly accessed modules like the dashboards, monitors, and alerts.
LabTech collects and tracks a lot of information about every machine that is being monitored and managed, including hardware, network, OS, running processes and services, patch status, installed software, and more. It's very easy to send commands to machines that are being managed, launch a chat with the local user, or take remote control for troubleshooting and support purposes.
You can create reports using the Report Manager found under the Tools menu. While all of the information that I needed is included in the reports, I was very disappointed that the reports are as sloppy as the GUI. Titles ran off the page, boxes overlapped, and graphics were frequently covered by their descriptions. There is no way that an administrator could print out any of these reports and hand them to his boss (and keep his job) without doctoring them to be legible. Fortunately, it's very easy to export report data to Excel or save the report as a PDF (this cleared up the formatting issues). Reports can also easily be customized and filtered.
Essentially, the agents collect everything you could imagine about the client machine and send it to the server where it is grouped together in a variety of dashboards, monitors, and reports. From the client management screen I could drill down into various pre-defined groups such as laptops, workstations, or servers, or create my own grouping based on some bit of information about the machine such as whether antivirus software was running or not. I could easily dive down into individual machines to evaluate installed software, patch status, or to see a hardware inventory or launch a remote control session in order to provide technical support.

Machines can also be grouped by location, such as 'accounting,' 'lab,' 'NYC,' or 'NJ.' It's also possible to save additional information within a location, such as a network diagram from Visio, or notes about the location and/or individual machines.
Poor GUI Detracts From Adequate Endpoint and Device Management
LabTech Global Client Management Platform is a powerful endpoint asset management and configuration management solution. It is relatively easy to install, configure and use. However, the control center GUI is rough around the edges, especially when viewing reports. The platform also relies too heavily on third-party and add-on modules to deliver features that other platforms include as part of their basic packages. And, while not a critical flaw, the fact that the company doesn't publish even basic pricing guidelines is a flaw in this age of straightforward MSP-style service delivery. The software does the job, but there are better options out there such as our Editors' Choice winner, Desktop Central or GFI LanGuard.
